Care grounded in experience and in teaching
Dr. Meseret Asfaw, DNP, PMHNP-BC
Jona Psychiatry was founded by Dr. Meseret Asfaw, DNP, PMHNP-BC, a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with more than 25 years of healthcare experience. She has worked across inpatient, outpatient, residential treatment and telepsychiatry settings, and provides comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, psychiatric medication management and supportive psychotherapy for adults in Maryland, Washington, DC and Virginia.
Alongside clinical practice, Dr. Asfaw serves as Assistant Professor of Nursing at Howard University and Adjunct Faculty at Wilkes University, where she mentors future nurses and psychiatric mental health providers. That combination of teaching and real-world practice keeps her care grounded in current evidence.

Before you book
If your question is not answered here, call (240) 673-7091 and we will talk it through.
Dr. Asfaw is licensed in Maryland, Washington DC and Virginia. For any appointment, in person or by video, you need to be physically located in one of those three at the time it takes place. That is a licensing rule, not a practice preference, and it applies even if you normally live in one of them.
This is an adult psychiatry practice. If you are looking for care for someone under 18, please contact us and we will point you toward services that are set up for younger patients.
The first appointment is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. Expect to talk through your current symptoms, your history, your physical health, any medication you take now and what you want to be different. Nothing is prescribed before that conversation has happened, and you will leave understanding what was found and what the options are.
Yes. Medication management is a core part of the practice, including starting, adjusting and, where appropriate, reducing or stopping medication. Any prescribing decision is made after an evaluation and with your agreement. Controlled substances are prescribed only where clinically appropriate and within state and federal rules.
