Telepsychiatry in Maryland, DC and Virginia

The same evaluation, the same prescribing and the same follow-up, from wherever you happen to be. For a lot of people it is the difference between getting care and putting it off again.

Please note: we are currently not accepting new patients in Virginia. Existing Virginia patients are unaffected.

What It Is

A real appointment, not a lesser version of one

Telepsychiatry is a psychiatric appointment held over secure video. It is used here for first evaluations and for ongoing medication management and supportive psychotherapy. What is discussed, what can be prescribed and how carefully you are followed up are unchanged.

The requirement is straightforward: you must be physically located in Maryland, Washington DC or Virginia at the time of the appointment. That is a licensing rule rather than a practice preference, and it applies even if you normally live in one of those three but happen to be travelling.

Step by Step

How an online appointment works

1

Request an appointment

Call the practice or send a request. We confirm which state you will be in, answer any questions about cost and cover, and book a time.

2

Complete the intake paperwork

Consent forms and an intake questionnaire are sent to you in advance. Completing them beforehand means the appointment itself is spent talking rather than filling in forms.

3

Join with a single link

You receive a secure link. Click it at your appointment time on a phone, tablet or computer. There is no account to create and no software to buy.

4

Your appointment

A full evaluation, or a follow-up review if you are already under care. Any prescription is sent electronically to the pharmacy you choose.

5

Follow-up

Follow-up appointments are booked before you leave the call, so treatment is reviewed on a schedule rather than only when something goes wrong.

Before You Join

What you need

Very little, and almost certainly things you already have.

A device with a camera

A phone, tablet or computer. Whichever you find easiest to use.

A steady connection

Home broadband or a reasonable mobile signal is enough.

Somewhere private

A room where you can speak freely. A parked car works if home does not.

To be in MD, DC or VA

Your physical location at the time of the appointment is what counts.

An Honest Answer

Is telepsychiatry right for you?

It suits most people most of the time, but not everyone and not always. Here is the plain version.

Usually a good fit

  • Ongoing medication management and review appointments
  • Anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD and sleep problems
  • Work, childcare or travel that makes attending in person hard
  • You are more comfortable talking from your own space
  • Follow-up you would otherwise skip

Better in person, or elsewhere

  • You are in crisis or at immediate risk. Call 911, or call or text 988
  • You have no private space and would not be able to speak freely
  • Treatment that needs physical examination or in-person monitoring
  • You will be outside Maryland, DC and Virginia on the day
  • You would simply rather be in the room, which is a good enough reason
Frequently Asked Questions

Telepsychiatry questions

Yes. Prescriptions are sent electronically to the pharmacy you choose. Controlled substances, including stimulant medication for ADHD, are subject to additional state and federal requirements, and in some cases an in-person appointment may be needed. That will be explained clearly rather than discovered later.

Appointments are held on a HIPAA-compliant, encrypted platform intended for healthcare. Ordinary consumer video calling is not used. Please note separately that email and website forms are not secure channels, so avoid putting sensitive clinical detail in them.

Tell us as soon as you know. If you will be outside Maryland, Washington DC or Virginia, the appointment cannot go ahead and will need to be moved. This applies wherever you normally live, because licensing follows your physical location at the time of the appointment.

Yes. Many people have their first evaluation in person and then move to video for follow-up, or the reverse. Both offices remain available to you either way.

Rejoin using the same link. If it will not reconnect, we will call you on the phone number held on file and continue or rebook from there. You will not lose the appointment because of a technical fault.
